Selling Your Home And Planning To Downsize After Your 50’s

Orlando, Fla.—The day has come, when your kids are heading off to college, and you are just realizing you have rooms filled with boxes and have now become a storage area. This would be a perfect opportunity to simplify your live.

Downsizing is not easy. It is often a stressful and tolling process — physically, and also emotionally.

The following are some tips to make that important step in your life, a little bit easier.

1. Think about the lifestyle you want to have.

You love you home may and created wonderful memories in it while the kids were growing up, but things have changed. Now you need to spare some time to think about what you your current needs are. For example, for a lot of people downtown living it’s a thing. Maybe you are tired of so much yard work and would like to spend more time and money just traveling.

2. Start early.

Start decluttering now,  before you’re ready to downsize This process will inevitably take longer than you expect. Take your time, and don’t try to sort through your entire house in one day or weekend. A couple of weeks to a month is a more realistic timeline. Take it one room at a time, and take breaks throughout.

3. Do you own antiques?

If you do, you should consider hiring a professional estate sales company. They can appraise your antiques and even sell them for you.

4. Do you any collections?

Yes, we know, collections are very hard to let go, but there are things you can do about it. Pick a couple to keep, and take high-resolution photos of the rest, then have them made into a photo book to show to your guests.

5. Eliminate rooms you won’t have in your new home.

If you’re moving to an apartment or townhome, you might not have a garage or office space. Nearly everything in those spaces will need to be sold, donated, tossed, or relocated to other rooms. You need three big boxes and a trash can to: keep, sell, and donate or toss. Everything you own should fit into one of those categories.

6. Allow some time to reminisce.

When cleaning and sorting, you will have moments when you want to look through the kindergarten drawings, soccer trophies, and once-prized stuffed animals. If things get tough with the nostalgia, one thing you can do is to stop and move to another room, only to come back later.

7. Ready to sell your house now?

Feeling stuck in your old house is a sign that it’s time to shake things up. With the kids gone and the house empty, now is the perfect time to make a fresh start.

Of course, every fresh start requieres adequate protection.  If you are moving to a condo or a townhome, it is important to keep it well protected with proper insurance coverage.
