ORLANDO, Fla.—According to a recently released 2017 Uniform Crime Report from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the numbers appear to be encouraging overall. As revealed by the report, crime in our state was down 4.5 percent, representing the lowest crime rate reported in 47 years.
However, when you see those numbers county-by-county — those of us located in Orange County don’t necessarily have that same level of optimism. The problem is that according to county specific data, Orange County is at the top of the chart with the highest crime incidence across the board.
Out of those 52,847 reported crimes, insurance wise it is important to know that burglary, larceny and vehicle theft are among the top figures with 8,188 for burglary, 33,622 cases of larceny and 3,839 stolen cars.
During the Holidays, it is important to take preventive measures, especially those families who travel and leave their homes and vehicles unattended for a designated period of time.
There are a few things you can do to prevent house burglary such as:
Landsapes can do wonders
A few well-placed motion-sensor lights, some thorny bushes or plants, and a couple of pruned trees can make your home more visible and make it harder for burglars to get into your house.
Don’t tell everyone in social media that you are leaving
This could be common sense, yet a lot of people can’t hold the excitement of their upcoming vacations and post every single detail since they’re packing bags, to when they’re actually waiting at an airport, listing the arrival destination! Ideally, you should wait until you’re back to to share all your lovely memories with the world and get all the likes you want. Also, to prevent your house to look uninhabited you can use timers to set lights and other appliances like radio or TV to work automatically for limited times. Mail and newspapers are another issue, but nowadays you can request online that the US Postal Service to hold your deliveries for the amount of time you’ll be away. Same thing goes with your newspapers subscriptions.
Home alarm systems are a great way to protect your household
The problem is that most standard alarm systems transmit their alerts over telephone lines. If you have an alarm system, talk to your alarm or phone service provider to see if it’s possible to hide your phone lines or set up a cellular signal, that way burglars can’t just cut the cables and feel free to break-in.
It’s very easy to secure sliding doors
You can toss a steel rod (or even something like a baseball bat) in the door channel is an easy way to secure your sliding doors. That’ll reduce the chance of someone lifting it out of the track or forcing it open.
Deadbolt all doors and secure all windows
Strong deadbolt locks and secured windows, even the ones on 2nd or 3rd stories, can discourage potential thieves just by making their jobs a little bit harder.
ENJOY LIFE RESPONSIBLY!
