All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

Health Issues Don’t Come “By Invitation Only”

Orlando, Fla.—Yes we are all well aware of the problems with health insurance coverage nationwide, and especially here in Florida. It’s quite a challenge to find a good, affordable health insurance plan to keep you and your family well protected— now more than ever.

That is part one. The part two of the equation is that for the thousands of Floridians who have been furloughed or lost their jobs, a continued health coverage via COBRA for example may not be a feasible option, because normally one of the most attractive benefits offered by big companies is precisely a good group policy with low or no copays, low deductibles and great coverage overall. What happens is that when you change your job you must comply with your wait period, usually 3 months, for the next coverage to kick in. If you lose your job and would like to consider keeping your coverage using your Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) benefit. COBRA generally requires that group health plans sponsored by employers with 20 or more employees in the prior year offer employees and their families the opportunity for a temporary extension of health coverage (called continuation coverage) in certain instances where coverage under the plan would otherwise end. The downside? you may end up paying a lot more than you were before, because your employer is no longer making its contribution, and the type of coverage as described before, is probably at the top of the line price wise.

There’s the Health Insurance Marketplace, for which you need to move quickly in order to be elegible for coverage outside of the regular open enrollment period, and be ready, because if you miss the mark even for one day—you will be out of luck. The Open Enrollment period for 2021 starts this November 1st, and ends on December 14th, for a coverage that starts on the first day of 2021. Open enrollment is the only time of year you can enroll in a health plan, switch plans, or re-enroll in your current plan the in individual and family market.
